The meaning of mandala comes from Sanskrit meaning “circle.” Even though it may be dominated by squares or triangles, a mandala has a concentric structure. Mandalas offer balancing visual elements, symbolizing unity and harmony. The meanings of individual mandalas is usually different and unique to each mandala. Many people find that the repetitive structure of the design relaxing as it gives your mind a focal point, allowing worries and distractions to fade as you focus on the design. Making your own mandala, either by painting, coloring or drawing is a great way to disconnect and allow your creative brain to come out and play. While mandalas can be created on any medium, the mandala stone offers a distinctly tactile experience from the search for a perfect stone to holding the finished piece in your hands.

In this class, we will address the basic principles of mandala design as well as tips and tricks for achieving the look you want in your final design. A selection of stones will be available for painting, but feel free to bring your own. The best rocks have a very smooth surface which allows for more even painting, but beyond that there are no ‘rules’.
